    Sponsorship Opportunities

The FABI Foundation is a Canadian not-for-profit organization focused on advancing clinical trials and research in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Sponsorship directly supports early-stage clinical research, data collection, and awareness initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for individuals affected by brain injury.

All sponsorships are for a 12-month term.

    Brain Injuries

Head injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), are common and often have serious long-term consequences. Despite this, there remains a major unmet need for effective therapies. The current standard of care offers limited diagnostic guidance, and there are no validated treatments available to minimize or reverse damage.

    In Plain Language:

Until now, there was little that could be done to assess injury severity, track recovery, or reverse brain damage.

Despite the scale of the problem and the significant potential market, most pharmaceutical companies do not invest in this area. This is due to lack of objective assessment tools, the highly heterogeneous nature of TBI patients, and the high risk of failure at substantial cost. While academic research has advanced our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying TBI, translating this knowledge into therapies requires clinical research.

The FABI Foundation exists to promote and support clinical research, which is essential to qualifying new and practical approaches to the treatment of TBI and concussion.

    WHY NOW:

    Two critical changes

First, for the first time, it is now possible to objectively measure both biological evidence of brain damage and corresponding behavioural responses. This represents a major milestone and is rapidly progressing through FDA approval process.

A landmark study published in JAMA Network Open (Peacock et al., 2025) demonstrated measurable progression of healing and a strong correlation between easily obtained blood-based biomarkers and behavioural changes. This technology provides, for the first time, objective measures that enable cost-effective clinical trials at meaningful scale. The technology has received Breakthrough designation and is available to FABI for projects that further demonstrate its real-world clinical value.

Second, several promising therapeutic approaches are supported by strong animal data but have not yet been tested in humans. Intellectual property limitations and the high cost of traditional patient assessment methods create major barriers to clinical evaluation, preventing many promising therapies from advancing into human trials.

    FABI’S Role

FABI directs funding toward clinical projects that may not meet traditional pharmaceutical return thresholds but offer realistic, low-cost therapeutic options for patients with TBI.

One example includes metabolically based therapies:

Supplemental ketones and ketogenic substrates show significant promise as a therapeutic strategy for healing TBI by addressing the post-traumatic “energy crisis” and providing neuroprotective effects.

Animal models consistently demonstrate improved recovery outcomes with ketosis, while early human research is focused on safety, feasibility, and optimal dosing.
